Regular Swim Meet

Once your swimmer achieves a sub-4:00 in the 200 IM, they become eligible to register for all regular swim meets attended by the club.

What to bring

  • Swimsuit
  • Goggles
  • Kamloops Classic Swim Cap
  • 2-3 large towels
  • Warm-up gear (sweatpants, KCS t-shirt, sweat shirt, etc.)
  • Activities for between races (books, games, etc.)
  • Healthy snacks and meals
  • Note: Swimmers are not permitted to have cell phones on deck

When you arrive

  • Check in with your coach to find out where your team will be sitting. Swim meets are usually quite busy and chaotic, so it helps to make a plan with your teammates and coach ahead of time.
  • Ask your coach where they will be located during the meet, so you know where to go for pre- and post-race conversations.
  • Your coach will also let you know where stretching will take place before warm-ups.

Warm-ups

Warm-ups are an exciting time, as the whole team is often swimming together in one lane. Typically, 12 & Under swimmers warm up at a different time than 13 & Over swimmers, although this can vary by meet. Warm-up lanes are very crowded, so it’s important to remember proper lane etiquette: swim up on the right-hand side, and avoid stopping unless instructed to do so. Your coach will provide specific directions on what to swim during warm-ups.

KCS Team Cheers

After the second set of warm-ups, the team usually gathers for a big, loud cheer. Be sure to ask your coach where and when to meet so you don’t miss it.

Heat sheets / Meet mobile

Meet programs are usually available for purchase at the pool and are often posted on the wall. The heat sheet shows where and when you will be swimming, though the times are approximate and may change.

Meet Mobile is an app that provides the same information as the heat sheet, but it may not always be up to date. Always confirm your races using a physical heat sheet at the meet.

Bring a Sharpie along with a pen, pencil, or highlighter. Use the heat sheets to locate your swimmer’s races, then write the information on your swimmer’s arm with the Sharpie. This helps them get to the right place at the right time. Other parents will often be around to assist.  It looks something like this:

Before and after your race

Be sure to check in with your coach before your race—they may have extra tips for you and will want to wish you good luck. After your race, your coach will celebrate your success and may offer pointers to help you swim even faster next time.

Sportsmanship

KCS takes pride in good sportsmanship. After your race, be sure to congratulate the swimmers in the lanes beside you. Also, remember to thank the timers in your lane—without their volunteer time, the meet and your race wouldn’t be possible.

Tips for parents

  • Help your child set reasonable goals. At their first swim meet, the main priority is for them to have fun.
  • Dress for a hot, humid pool. Some facilities have excellent ventilation, while others may feel quite warm.
  • Bring a book or another quiet activity, as there can be significant downtime between races.
  • Stay off the pool deck and allow the coaches to work with your swimmer.
  • Volunteer when you can—you’ll get the best view of the action on deck.
  • Consider bringing a small cooler with food, as some meets have limited or no concession options.
